Golden Stupas, Ancient Temples: The Treasures of Burma
Start Date: November 09, 2010
End Date: November 22, 1010
Trip Status: Waitlist

Burma, in spite of its political problems, is a country of great fascination. Its ancient monuments and unbroken traditions speak of a rich culture and complex history. Deeply imbued with Buddhism, blended with lingering animism, Burma has pursued a unique artistic path. Its temples have evolved their own singular shape, and its gentle and welcoming people have not forgotten their traditions. Today still, there is much to see—antiquities, of course, but also the creations of local artisans.

We begin in Singapore, where we will stroll through the lovely Botanical Garden before flying on to Burma. Spend a night in Yangon on our way to Mandalay, the country’s cultural heart. View exceptional examples of traditional art and architecture, including the 12th-century Khmer bronze statues at the Mahamuni Pagoda and the U Bein Bridge, the longest teak bridge in the world. An excursion is planned to the nearby Mahaghandayon Monastery, where thousands of Buddhist monks live and study.

Pass peaceful villages and lovely scenery during an overnight cruise along the Irrawaddy River. Disembark in Bagan, a great capital of Southeast Asia from the 10th to the 15th century. The city developed its own style of architecture and sculpture, and today it is one of the richest archeological sites on the continent. We will visit some of the most impressive of its 1,000 remaining pagodas, enjoy a pony cart ride through Old Bagan and travel to Mount Popa to discover the extraordinary hilltop temple.

Return to Yangon, a historic city with an interesting mix of British, Burmese, Chinese and Indian influences. View several elaborate pagodas and browse traditional handicrafts at the bustling Bogyoke market.

Join us for this exceptional program combining ancient sites, Buddhist traditions and stunning natural beauty.
